What is NHPL?

Welcome to the National Horse Protection League - an online community dedicated to making every horse a wanted horse. Our mission is simple: to protect horses and help owners who can no longer care for their animals find a humane and loving alternative to cruel death or abandonment. Our immediate focus is on pressuring Congress to pass legislation that closes the slaughter houses for good.

Hay for Horses

The National Horse Protection League (NHPL) is launching a special “Hay for Horses” fundraising drive throughout the month of July to help struggling horse rescue centers. Every dollar you contribute to this campaign will go directly to horse rescue facilities.*

There is a crisis affecting the welfare of horses in this country.  Humans aren’t the only ones suffering as a result of the tragic flooding in the Midwest and the rising cost of gasoline. The cost of feed for horses is now soaring, making it increasingly difficult for many horse owners to care for their horses.

Skyrocketing costs are especially burdensome for horse rescue facilities that care for abandoned horses. These rescues are under incredible pressure to provide care for many horses, with more people giving up their horses because of today’s tough economic circumstances, and have very limited financial support.

Join us in helping resource-strained rescues. Every penny you give helps these rescues care for horses that have been abused, abandoned, or saved from slaughter. Click here to help horses!

* The funds collected will be distributed through Blue Horse Charities, an organization which helps fund rescue services and adoption for thoroughbreds at the end of their racing or breeding careers

Retired Racers Find a New Track

Rosey, a thoroughbred, canters through a left-hand turn like, well, a thoroughbred: head high, eyes proud, locomotive haunches driving ballerina legs. Round and round she ran on a recent afternoon, her trainer guiding her with a 10-foot lead in a steady counterclockwise loop. Rosey around a ring.

Strange horse slaughter journalism at USA Today

In her opinion piece on horse slaughter titled Homeless on the Range (August 14th 2007 USA Today), Mary Zeiss Stange demonstrates a remarkable journalistic ability to ferret out the truth and then painstakingly avoid it.
